abandoned-adopted-12ADOPTION  PROCEDURES

The cats and dogs brought to the Humane Society Shelter are evaluated and tested  by a local veterinarian.  The animals are then cared for until they are free from any illness, disease, or other ailment.  When the veterinarian gives an animal the green light for adoption, the animal is posted on our website as available.  Therefore, when the public visits the Shelter and/or our website, all the cats and dogs shown are in excellent health and are waiting patiently for their “forever home.”

The Shelter staff is quite adept at knowing the personality of the cats and dogs in their charge, and the staff aptly advises a potential adopter.  The staff lets you know whether the dog gets along with other dogs and/or cats, or if the dog should be the only pet.   Likewise, they inform you whether a cat gets along with dogs and/or other cats.  The staff is, therefore, very helpful in answering questions and making suggestions to help you decide if a given pet is the right one for you.

If you have a dog and are interested in getting another one, it is recommended that you bring your dog to the Shelter with you so it can interact with the new dog you may choose.  This way, you will know that the dogs will accept one another and get along well.

When adopting a pet, there is a little paperwork to be completed, and you are asked to give a $50 adoption fee for a cat, and a $60 adoption fee for a dog.  Any animal, waiting to be spayed or neutered, can be pre-adopted following the usual adoption procedures.  However, that animal may not be picked up until after it has been spayed or neutered.

Before making the trip to the Shelter, you may wish to check our website to see the fine cats that are available for adoption or the fine dogs that are available for adoption.   You may also enjoy scrolling through the lovely pets that have already been adopted.

Thank you for your consideration of adopting a pet from the Humane Society of Lake County.  Both you and your new pet will be very happy.
